Rhotenberry Wellen Architects The owner, leading media graphic designer Roger Black, asked for a quick and cheap place to stay on his 3,000-acre West Texas ranch. This house is made from five recycled shipping containers and cost less than $200,000 to transport, construct and outfit.
Five freestanding cargo containers lined up and cinched together on a 3,000-acre ranch in the rugged, rocky high desert mountains of West Texas reduce life to its basics:  One container holds a living room;  two house bedrooms and bathrooms;  another a kitchen and eating area, while the last  is for storage.

Although built with five wind- and water-resistant ISBUs and a concrete foundation, the home provides a contemporary look and feel; when you look at the exterior or walk inside, it does not feel at all like you are walking into large metal boxes stacked on top of each other. Measuring in at 1,600 square feet, the home took about 90 days to complete at a cost of roughly $100 per square foot.

Proyecto ARQtainer - Casa, Chile - 5 shipping container Home

Five corten steel shipping containers, 2 x 40 Foot and 3 x 20 Foot were transformed into a bright orange earthquake-proof home that sits on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile. The house, by Project ARQtainer, was developed as an earthquake-resistant and low-cost home that could be built in a small time frame. For the architects, shipping containers provided the ideal building material given their strength, durability, stackability, modular form and ample availability. Measuring a little over 1,200 square feet, the container home features thermal pane windows, internal coating plasterboard and projected cellulose insulation.
