An affordable housing complex built from a dozen old shipping containers was unveiled in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The 12 shipping containers on Alexander Street near Jackson Avenue have been converted into apartments by the Atira Women's Resource Society, which bought a lot on the block in 2009. The first shipping container was dropped on the lot at the end of November, and each unit cost $82,500 to build.

The 320-square-foot containers have been stacked three high and feature 290 square feet of living space. Each unit has its own private bathroom, kitchen and in-suite laundry. The homes also have floor-to-ceiling windows, and each floor is linked by an external staircase.

Shipping containers come in lengths of up to 53 feet, meaning that relatively large offices and living spaces can be created within a single shipping container. However, for practicality in cost and shipping, the 40-foot length is what’s typically used.  When a larger office space is needed, you can create a shipping container office using stacked Conex boxes, creating a multi-level building that fits a great deal of office space into a compact area.
Multi-level shipping container offices can be equipped with numerous features to make communication and access between the various parts of the office effortless. For example, the office can be equipped with both interior and exterior stairways. This allows for travel between office spaces that mimics the functionality of traditional office buildings.
While Conex boxes can be stacked, they can also be joined to create wider office spaces. The choice will depend on your business needs. For example, if you are placing your shipping container office in an environment with limited surface area, or if you would like stricter partitions between each component of the office, a multi-story office may be best. The Fox Residence is an alternative housing solution. It is constructed using Inter-modal Steel Building Units (ISBUs), commonly known as shipping containers. What we came up with is a configuration of nine 40′ high cube containers and one 20′ high cube container. The 40-footers are arranged in a three story bank of two and a three story stack one container wide, with a four foot gap in between. The gap contains vertical circulation and space for routing building systems. This creates a home with 2450 square feet of conditioned space on top of a 1200 square foot garage and workshop. The construction rests on a continuous perimeter grade beam with a few pad footings
