Wood Tex Adirondack Cabin

This 16' x 28' Adirondack Cabin is much smaller and more affordable than the Wood-Tex Gatlinburg Cabin I posted previously (see that post by clicking here).   The 16' x 28' figure includes the covered porch which looks to be about 16' x 6'.  That makes the enclosed space only 16' x 22', which equates to 352 square feet.   That's pretty small, but it could be a great vacation get-away, guest house, in-law flat, rental apartment, or even a full time residence for the right single person or couple.  A sign on the inside of the cabin said you could buy it and have it delivered within 100 miles of their Himrod, NY store for $21, 600.  That's less than the price of most new cars.

The inside is divided into three spaces, great room, bedroom, and bathroom.  The big covered porch is effectively a fourth space, albeit an outdoor one.  It wouldn't be too tough to turn that covered porch into a screened-in porch or three season room to extend the useable space a bit.

I'm a big fan of rustic style myself, so I love the all wood interior with log cabin style kitchen and bathroom cabinets.  You can tell from the photos that the cabin is completely finished, inside and out, including plumbing and wiring.  I believe it is completely insulated too.  Other than a small electric hot water heater, no heating or cooling is installed.

There must be a reason that the window next to the door has a low head height.  I just don't know what that reason is.

The kitchen doesn't lend itself to having a conventional stove and refrigerator installed because of the layout of the windows.  This is not a problem for the tiny house crowd.  They are fine with a small fridge under the counter, a single bowl sink, and a two burner cooktop.  If you need more, I'm sure this company would be happy to build you a customized version that includes a more complete kitchen.

The panel in front of the sink tilts down to reveal a place to keep cleaning utensils.

The bedroom is small, but big enough to squeeze a queen sized bed into.  It is rectangular in shape, and I lay down on the floor and was almost able the fully extend my arm above my head, suggesting that the shorter of the two dimensions is close to eight feet.  It doesn't have a closet, but there are many simple solutions to that problem.  The odd thing is that this little bedroom has it's own door to the outside.  That restricts how you can potentially place furniture in the room, unless you choose to ignore the door, keep it permanently locked, and treat it as though it's a window that doesn't open.

All in all, at under $22k, the Wood-Tex Adirondack Cabin seems like a pretty good value.

Wood Tex Adirondack Cottage

Every time I drive past the Wood-Tex place in Himrod, NY, I stop in to see if I can get some photos of the interior of this cottage.  I've been trying for months, but this model is always locked-up tight, so I was happy to finally get in last weekend.

Front view of Wood-Tex Adirondack Cottage
Wood-Tex advertises the model as 16' x 40', but those dimensions include the 16' x 6' front porch.  The enclosed space is more like 16' x 34' which by my calculation is 544 square feet.  Their brochure calls it 510 square feet, but I'm not sure how they calculate that.  They are probably subtracting wall thicknesses or something from the square footage.

Kitchen view

As you can see in the photos, the place is nicely finished and furnished.  I did a post on a smaller Wood-Tex model called the Adirondack Cabin ( click here to see it) previously.  The cabin model had distinct log cabin features both inside and out, whereas this model is slightly larger and as it name implies, it has more cottage-like finishes inside and out.  I also did a previous post on a very nice 768 square foot Wood-Tex log cabin with a loft, called the Gatlinburg cabin.  Click here to see that post.

Dining area
This model would certainly be nice in the backyard as a guest cottage, in-law apartment, granny flat, or place for a returning adult child.  It would also make a nice vacation home or full time stand-alone residence (where permitted) for a single or couple.  It has a separate bedroom that's about 10' x 15' with a nice closet.

There's also a three fixture bathroom that is about 5' x 8' and includes a combination tub/shower.

The photo below is taken from the bedroom looking out past the bathroom into the great room which is a combination living room, dining room, and L-shaped kitchen.

Great room
A sign posted inside says that you can buy this model as a shell for $24,370.00.  The way it is in the photos includes $25, 295.00 in options including finished walls, ceiling, floors, insulation, bathroom, kitchen, electrical, heating, and modular home certification.  The whole package comes to $49,665.00.  UPDATE:  AS OF JUNE, 2013, THE NEW PRICE FOR THIS MODEL IS $56,350.

Wood Tex 768 Square Foot Prefab Cabin

I found this modular cabin for sale by the roadside while on a recent drive near Seneca Lake in New York.   I snapped these photos with my phone's camera quickly because I was in a hurry to get to my destination .  This cabin's dimensions are 16' x 32', with a 16' x 16' loft.  The front also features a 16' x 4' covered porch.  It seemed pretty nice, both inside and out.  The company that makes it is called Wood-Tex.
Front of the "Gatlinburg Cabin."

The cabin has a Gambrel roof covered in asphalt shingles, and the second floor loft overlooks the living/dining/kitchen area (which I'll call the "great room").  The first floor has the great room I mentioned, a bedroom that's approximately 10' x 15', a 3/4 bath, and the porch.

The kitchen cabinets echo the log cabin theme
I think that the kitchen cabinets, counter top and sink are part of the package, but you'd supply your own stove and refigerator. The place is finished inside and out, plumbed, wired, and insulated.  I think a water heater may come with it too.  The water heater resides in a base cabinet to the right of the stove as you face the kitchen.

Living/dining/kitchen area.
The great room has a vaulted ceiling, which adds to its sense of spaciousness.  There is also a full set of stairs leading to the loft.  No need for a ladder to get upstairs, but then again, this isn't a tiny home, just a small one.  I'm sure it's intended as a vacation home, but it looks like it would make a perfectly good full time residence to me.  There is a sign posted on the inside that says "Buy one just like me for $52,808!  Price includes delivery within 100 miles of Himrod, NY."  It also says you can buy the shell for $27,958.  Obviously, shipping beyond 100 miles will cost more, but I picked-up a brochure that says you can buy one just like it and have it shipped "most anywhere in the USA for about $60k!"  UPDATE: THE PRICE OF THIS MODEL HAS INCREASED DRAMATICALLY COMPARED TO WHEN I WROTE THIS POST IN OCTOBER OF 2012.  AS OF JUNE 2013 THE CURRENT PRICE IS $78,020.

The loft.
View down from the loft.
I forgot to snap a picture of the bedroom, but it has the same finishes as everywhere else, and I think that's where the electrical panel is.  It just had a door and a window, no closet.  If I were buying it, I think I'd have them put in two closets along the wall that has the kitchen counter on it.  A small one next to the bathroom for a stacked washer/dryer, and a bigger one for clothes.  Maybe I'd have them put in a small third closet with a door to the outside that would be a mechanical space to keep batteries in for a solar electrical system.  Slap some solar panels on the roof, install a little wind turbine nearby, make sure your stove, refrigerator, water heater, and dryer can run on propane, and you could live off the grid!
Rear view.
The brochure also says"Floor plans are customizable.  You dream it, we'll design it!"  I don't think they'll mind if I tell you you can call them at 1-866-966-3839, or email them at:  sales@woodtex.com.

Wood Tex Prefab Cayuga Log Cabin

If you like small homes, but aren't prepared to go tiny, this one might be for you.  I imagine lots of folks would consider a house the size of a modest two car garage with a loft to be pretty small.  Toward the bottom of this post I'll include links to other Wood-Tex homes I've posted in the past, and a video I shot of this home.

The Cayuga Cabin is a certified modular home with a rustic log cabin style inside and out.  The overall dimensions of the main floor are 24' x 23', making it about 552 square feet.  The loft dimensions are 14' x 23', which adds another 322 square feet for a total of about 874 feet squared (minus the area of the stairs which would otherwise be counted twice).

The main floor features a great room with a vaulted ceiling, and includes the kitchen, living room, and dining area.  Two pairs of sliding doors lead to a deck, and there's enough space to install a wood burning or gas stove between them for supplemental heat and ambiance.

The remainder of the first floor consists of a bedroom, bathroom, and a hall running between them that has its own outside door at the end.  By my count, the house has four closets, one in each bedroom, one in the bathroom, and one under the stairs.

A nicely finished set of wood stairs leads to a second floor loft.  The loft has about half the area of the main floor, and it's divided into two spaces.  There's a nice open loft space that looks out over the great room, and there's also a separate enclosed second bedroom.

According to their website, which I just checked today (12/14/2013), this model is currently on sale for about $72,000.
